In August 2023 I was contacted by the BBC about the Death Letter Project—and long story short—I was interviewed by Ray Martin for a forthcoming documentary series about Death In Australia which will be broadcast on SBS in 2024. I honestly am truly humbled. It was an experience I will never forget and I met some truly awesome individuals along the way with special mention of Ray, Kristin Quayle-Graham and the BBC crew as well as some of the individuals involved in the death field including Ahmad (photograph below) who has written a letter for the Death Letter Project, which will be published soon.
Here is some information about the documentary:
Acclaimed journalist Ray Martin plans his own funeral, uncovering how Australia is choosing to say goodbye to our dead. Ray will discover the trends, cultural rituals, methods and emerging tech around the way we lay ourselves to rest as we shake hands with death.
It’s a poignant, revealing and, at times, humorous quest that will see Ray challenge his own expectations while going down the rabbit hole into some unusual emerging practices such as cryonics, upright burial and body composting.
This is the second original series from BBC Studios Productions Australia for SBS following the earlier commission of The Matchmakers which will also air in 2024.
Kylie Washington, General Manager and Creative Director, BBC Studios Productions Australia said:
“This is a fascinating exploration of Australians’ relationship with death, there are so many different ways that we choose to farewell life, from the deeply spiritual to the wholly pragmatic and this series gives an insight into what draws people to those choices.”

“My latest series, We Could Be Immortals, explores humankind’s religious/spiritual hope for immortality, through the construction of illusory billboards and signs, placed within the Australian landscape. In this work, the roadside billboard, advertising Paradise 5KM, presents a focal point onto which the viewer projects their own imagined vision of the elusive afterlife.”

“I created this work on 16th December 2014 - the day the #ILLRIDEWITHYOU hashtag went viral, in response to an increase of violence and intimidation directed at the Australian Muslims, during and immediately following the Sydney siege. The #ILLRIDEWITHYOU movement, conceived by Rachael Jacobs, sought to provide emotional and physical support to Muslims riding alone on public transport, via commuters posting/tweeting their bus/train routes on social media, offering to ride with anyone feeling threatened. Within 24-hrs of posting this work on Facebook, as an expression of my solidarity with the movement, it was shared 900+ times and had 74,000+ hits.”

“The unique connection between twins is known to extend beyond life itself. In many cases, when one twin dies, their co-twin will not only sense their passing, but receive visitations from the spirit of the deceased. This portrait of twin sisters, Tjana and Michelle, explores this sense of eternal connection.”
